6. I’m interested in joining but intimidated. What should I do?

6. I’m interested in joining but intimidated. What should I do?

Please reach out and say so, jared@membersworkshop.com. Members Workshop is working hard to create a welcoming environment. We’re happy to show you around the shop before you commit. Once you are a member we’re happy to offer guidance on tool use and safety. Additionally we’re happy to introduce you to other members who can be a great resource when you have questions.

It’s also worth mentioning that we have put a lot of effort into shop signage and labeling. Everything you need to know to use tools and find what you need can be found by reading the labels and signage.

7. Is the workshop for personal use only?

7. Is the workshop for personal use only?

Members are welcome to use Members Workshop tools and space for both personal use and small business purposes. Extensive use of the machines is acceptable, as long as other members are not kept waiting too long. Members Workshop is a small business and we want to encourage other small businesses.

9. Is there a minimum age to join?

You must be at least 18 years of age to join Members Workshop. At this time, unaccompanied minors are not permitted in the workshop. Minors may accompany an adult as a guest. A separate waiver must be filled out for each minor. Members assume full responsibility for the actions and wellbeing of their minor guests.

10. What if I break a tool?

10. What if I break a tool?

If you’re using the tools for their intended function you need not worry. Tools sometimes break.

There is a labeled bin for small broken tools and “out of service tags” for larger tools. Our primary concern is making it clear that the tool is broken so other members don’t accidentally hurt themselves with it. Tools broken by obvious abuse will be handled on a case by case basis.

The Sawstop table saws are an exception, the safety mechanism instantly stops the saw if you accidentally touch the blade while cutting. The blade and brake need to be replaced when that happens and they are available in the shop for $150 total. With a little bit of care most members will never trip the safety mechanism.

14. Most of the tools are for woodworking, can I work on other types of projects?

Whether you like fixing bicycles and machines, building your own electronics, painting large canvases, or you need to cut and drill metal parts for your next project, Members Workshop makes it practical.

Members Workshop will be as accommodating as possible to large and odd projects. If you’re wondering about your project please just ask.

23. Can I donate tools or materials?

Generosity is always appreciated, however Jared is picky about the tools that become part of the workshop so please don’t be offended if Members Workshop passes on a generous offer. Please do not donate anything to the shop without consulting ownership, as this can create safety concerns.

27. What if the previous user didn’t clean up after themselves?

The most important thing we can do to keep the workshop clean is to normalize it being clean. Members Workshop humbly asks that you clean up after yourself, plus a little. It’s not your job to clean up after others but by doing so now and then you’re helping set the expectation.

Members who don’t clean up after themselves will be addressed on a case by case basis.

28. Do you provide safety equipment?

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for most tool use. It's always good to bring your own but we do have some PPE for sale. Safety glasses, ear muffs, ear plugs, hair ties are usually available. Cash, check or Venmo can be used to pay for PPE.
